the new face of western imperialism
As the United States again rallies European support (under the guise of NATO) for another military foray into the Middle East in the name of freedom and democracy, the face of Western Imperialism and colonialism has changed. The players, the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany remain the same; but the face of this long-standing European alliance is now black. Barack Hussein Obama, the 42nd president of the United States has willingly or unwittingly assumed the leadership mantle of Western Imperialism. This has taken place despite the fact that he was elected and re-elected President on an anti-war platform. Less than a year in office, Obama was even awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. How ironic that now six years into his presidency he has conducted more drone strikes than George W. Bush, and aided and abetted in the massacre of hundreds of innocent Palestinian women and children, through overt and covert U.S. financial and military support of Israel. It’s no secret that many of the weapons used by the Israeli armed forces against the Palestinian homeland are made in the U.S. and are paid for with U.S. military aid to Israel. This massacre was waged and justified by the Israeli government, in spite of the strong public outcry denouncing the savage slaughter of the Palestinians in its most recent 60-day bombing onslaught.
Even more ironic is the fact that a black man is now poised to perpetuate the slaughter and destruction of thousands more people of color in the name of liberation, freedom and democracy. The U.S. killed over 200,000 Iraqis in the Gulf Wars under Bush Senior and Junior, which were both wars of questionable necessity to say the least. The stated mission of the second Gulf War was to destroy weapons of mass destruction that as it turned out didn’t exist. The U.S. mission was then amended to be for “the liberation of the Iraqi people.” Then after trillions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives later, Iraq, Libya and Syria have devolved into the hot beds of Islamic extremism that have given rise to the civil wars and sectarian violence that now engulfs the Middle East.
Make no mistake, the misguided U.S. policies of military conquest and covert operations to foster regime change, and the placement of Western-backed puppet governments in the Middle East, is the catalyst for the meteoric rise of militant groups like ISIS and al-Shabab. With every Iraqi, Syrian, Palestinian, and African we and our so-called allies kill in the name of the “war on terror,” we spawn a thousand more virulent enemies of the West. As we have seen, these new and growing enemies of the West are willing to exact vengeance by any means necessary, including suicide bombers and beheadings. How long will this military assault on people of color continue before right thinking people have the consciousness and courage to call it what it is—genocide! We’ve seen this movie before.
It only takes a quick glance at history to understand that the path America is taking is nothing new. Go back to the Roman Empire and its fall, and then compare the similarities. The analogies are striking: burdensome taxes on the middle and lower class; a widening and unconscionable gap between rich and poor, where an increasing majority of citizens fall into the categories of poverty or near-poverty; tax burdens that fall disproportionally on the poor, while the rich escape taxes through an unfair system that rewards the wealthy through disparate tax obligations and loop holes; military opportunism and occupation far beyond our borders under the guise of liberation and democracy. The writing is on the wall. Wake up Obama! Wake up America!
As racial disparities and discrimination at home illuminate the continuing oppression of African Americans, through the killing of unarmed black men in New York and Ferguson, Missouri, the centuries-old marginalization and subjugation of people of color takes on a new and urgent relevance. These most recent blatant and latent forms of discrimination against African Americans should once and for all shatter the charade of a post racial society being promulgated by white Americans. As America’s military war machine amps up for another war under the pretext of humanitarian aid, and militarized police forces across the nation turn their weapons of war on unarmed black and brown civilians, what’s next?
The cruelest irony of all is that a black face is being used to perpetuate the genocide taking place in American cities like Ferguson and others, and all across the Middle East and Africa. The comparisons are striking. The new face of Western Imperialism is now black.
